ISON

HISTORY

Prof. Possover who developed the Neuropelveology and performed the first laparoscopic pelvic neurofunctional procedures up the early 2000’s, recognize the need to share his knowledge and research achievements, teaching, and further professional training in diagnostic and therapy of pelvic nerves conditions – he called this new field in medicine “Neuropelveology”.

On his initiative and a group of committed endoscopist, Axel Forman – Aarhus/DK, Vito Chiantera – Palermo/I, Benoit Rabischong – Clermont-Ferrand/F and Nucelio Lemos – Sao Paulo/Br, the International Society of Neuropelveology (ISON) was officially founded 2014 in Brüssels/B. Each founding member of ISON has, over the past 10 years, committed all its efforts and knowledge to help ISON spread and grow.

“Our aim is to provide a platform for the teaching in neuropelveology, exchange of ideas and knowledge related to this groundbreaking discipline. The ISON provide the essential infrastructure and organizational framework for the support and development of neuropelveological education and research worldwide, and would like to invite you to join us in our mission”

ISON is the first Society for neuropelveology. ISON provides various scientific and educational activities for doctors: e-learning program with final examination in Clinical Neuropelveology (ISON certification level 1), workshops on nervsparing techniques in pelvic surgeries, the LION (Laparoscopic Implantation of Neuroprosthesis to the pelvic nerves and plexuses) and GNS (Genital Nerves Stimulation) procedures, Hands-on Cadaver Workshop, and ISON certifications (three levels). The ISON Annual Congress is also the largest neuropelveologic meeting in the World. It also holds congresses in conjunction with its affiliated societies, which are becoming increasingly popular in Scandinavian, Asia, India, Pacific regions, and South America.

ISON also endeavors to promote the educational exchanges between different societies and countries; more than hundreds of doctors have completed the Certification ISON Level 1 and Level 2 of ISON. The first training center in neuropelveology has been developed by Possover in Zürich (www.possover-neuropelveology.com).

ISON will developed further training centers around the world for all pelvic physicians to have more opportunities to obtain and share the most current knowledge and the latest skills.

The 1st International Congress of the ISON took place 2018 in Zürich. At this congress, Axel Forman took over as President of ISON. His first decision as president was to officially name the LION procedure for recovery walking in spinal cord injured peoples after its founder – the “Possover procedure”. Three people were also awarded “Honorary Life Member of the ISON”, Mrs Silke Possover, for her daily support of Prof. Possover, Mrs. Dr. h.c. mult. Sybille Storz for her commitment to the ISON and Prof. Lilo Mettler for her fascination for the neuropelveology.

Because of the pandemic, the Congress planed in Aarhus 2021 was canceled and replaced by webinars.

2022, the ISON Board nominated Marc Possover as the Life-Chairman of the ISON.

ISON will start again with his activities 2024 with the 2nd International Congress in Neuropelveology which will take place in Paris – 17-18th May 2024.

Over the past 10 years, ISON has gathered a few inspiring topics and expertise since our goals are to provide a platform for the pelvic physicians and laparoscopic/robotic surgeons who desired to enhance their surgical skills and knowledge in neuropelveology.

As for the continuous research and practical practice, Laparoscopic pelvic neurofunctional surgery has gained popularity due to developments in pelvic neuroanatomy and endoscopic apparatus that led to the emergence of laparoscopy in the past decades as a credible diagnostic as well as a unique therapeutic tool for treatment for pelvic nerves conditions. The progress is non-stopped; we welcome everyone to join us, to make ISON an acknowledged association.
